Songs For Swingin' Lovers!:
Sinatra on Capitol
capitol CDP 7 46570 2
This third in the Capitol Records series of must-haves was recorded on October 17, 1955, January 9, 10, 12 and 16, 1956. Harry "Sweets" Edison, trumpeter extraordinaire, plays some trumpet obligatos on the collection that truly make the tunes kick. The album was designed for the new 12" LP format...a lot more tunes per album. The session was supposed to finish on a Friday night. Thursday, in the middle of the night, the A&R Department called Sinatra and told him that three more songs were needed. Sinatra called Nelson, who was living out in Malibu and woke him up and told him they needed three more arrangements. The next night, coming in for the final date, Nelson's wife was driving and he was in the backseat with a flashlight, still writing out the parts. One of those arrangements was for I've Got You Under My Skin.
At the studio, Riddle started to conduct in his absolutely unflappable manner. He conducted the set and after they'd rehearsed I've Got You Under My Skin and the folks in the studio heard what Nelson had done to this old standard, they just stood up and applauded. He just stood there with cigarette ashes all over him and said, "Yeah, how about that?" The record became a Sinatra classic.
The album swings and swings and swings and remains as one of my favorite albums of all time...
